I just updated my old Acer Aspire 9300 and it works like a charm! I bought 2GB of RAM, 320 GB disk drive and Windows 7.
I didn’t attempt any upgrades, just a fresh install on the new disk drive. The installation was a no-brainer – and completed within 30 minutes.
I’ve been using Windows 7 quite a lot over the last three days (yes, only 3!) and it’s been a real pleasure so far. The system “feels” very solid and reliable – although I really can’t comment on this point after such a brief period of use. I promise to provide an updated review after at least three months :-)
I’ve been working in IT for more than ten years, and I enjoy using many of the OS’s out there. I really like to see the progress made on all OS flavours. Compared to ten years ago, it’s a dream! I now have a Acer ONE netbook with Linpus Linux Lite (great little machine!), my Macbook Pro with Leopard (nice!), and my refurbished Acer Aspire with Windows 7 (surprisingly good!). All machines have their advantages and disadvanges. I’m lucky enough to be able to simply pick the right tool for the job every time.
I was pleasantly surprised that, compared to Leopard, Windows 7 has a very similar experience in terms of responsiveness – especially after waking up from sleep mode. Also, the web browsing, and general application experience is very good.
I like the new task bar and I’m NOT going to comment on how similar this is to Linux/MacOS ;-).
I like the fact that the UAC is not annoying me. In fact, pretty much all of my complaints regarding Vista have disappeared with Win7. I remember enthusiastically installing Vista (as an upgrade) when it first came out. Initially I was impressed by the Aero effects – but the novelty soon wore thin – and I found myself using my Macbook most of the time due mainly to the huge difference in responsiveness between the two systems.
So, after the latest Win 7 purchase and install – I AM VERY HAPPY!
Windows 7 actually beat my expectations – so on that criterion alone I feel like I’ve gotta give it 5 stars. By the way – if I was asked to rate Leopard, I’d give it 5 stars too. My Linpus lite would get a 4 – it simply met my expectations and does exactly what it is supposed to (but no more).
